Combining archaeological research with specialist training and a lot of fun!

As an established archaeological field school, Rampart offers unique opportunities for students, tourists, and local enthusiasts to engage with Scotland's rich archaeological heritage through hands-on fieldwork experience.

Phil and Jim Thompson

"My son and I joined the dig for a day and despite not having any practical experience, we were soon 'scraping back' and being given expert and helpful advice on what to look for. The two sites in King's Park were very different and a great introduction to field archaeology. Highly recommend anyone to have a go! "

Dr Murray Cook

Murray has extensive experience and expertise  over many years having excavated sites from the Mesolithic to the Edwardian period.

"I am so happy with my experience at the King’s Park excavation 2025. Murray and Dominic were fantastic teachers and created such a warm, welcoming environment to learn about archaeology and local history. Even with Scotland’s unpredictable weather (ha!), we always had a great time and ended each day having learned something new. It truly was one of the best experiences of my life!"

“Volunteering on the King’s Park fort project was a 10/10, and I would encourage anyone who has an interest in archaeology to sign up. I flew over from the United States to experience a genuine archaeological dig, and I’m so glad I did. With zero prior experience and never having been to Scotland, I was very nervous leading up to my first day. Once I got to the site however, all of my worries melted away! Everyone working on the project was friendly and welcome, and I quickly made friends with my fellow volunteers. Murray did an excellent job of giving clear and concise instructions, and explaining the historical context of the site. He truly brought each artifact to life, which motivated everyone to continue digging, brushing, and recording throughout the day. It was such an honor it was to uncover bits and pieces of Roman-era history, and I would love to participate on another dig again!”

"Going on an archaeological dig is something I have always wanted to do, but it has taken until after my retirement to actually achieve it ... and it didn't disappoint! The evocative setting of King's Park together with a friendly group of fellow volunteers of all ages and nationalities and Murray, Jill and Dom's infectious enthusiasm and historical knowledge all combined together to make it a very memorable experience.

Thanks to you all!"
